The Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) is a movement screening designed to clinically assess faulty movement patterns which may be the cause of your pain. It is a way of identifying whether your pain is due to a lack of mobility or a lack of stability. Many times pain and dysfunction are caused by a lack of joint mobility. This issue needs chiropractic treatment. Often pain is produced by a lack of mobility in other soft tissues such as muscles, ligaments or fascia. These circumstances call for soft tissue treatment such as Active Release Technique (ART). Another frequent scenario is when pain and dysfunction are the result of some kind of basic instability. In this case the recommendation would be some kind of exercise. You can imagine what could happen if you adjust an unstable joint.

This is where SFMA comes in. It looks at seven basic movement patterns from head to toe to determine if you are lacking in mobility or stability. This highly accurate screening was developed through a collaboration of some of the preeminent movement specialists in the fields of physical therapy, chiropractic and athletic training. It is one of the tools along with postural analysis and gait analysis to determine the cause of your pain or dysfunction.
